In addition, Segala has successfully brought technology into her small-scale farming cooperative to increase competitiveness, and to build relationships with local government for the distribution of their products.

"We operate from the perspective that mother earth provides food for their children," Segala says in relation to the award. "For example, there is no need to spend much money to get food to feed animals to produce milk and meat. When we are aware of what nature can offer us, we see that a
lot can be transformed into food for the animals. Often we don't need to cultivate new kinds of food, but simply reap what is already available on the land."
